Abstract

As the oldest law training faculty in East Africa, the Schoolof Law has shaped the laws and judicial systems in the EastAfrican region. Therefore it has to take lead in the legaltraining of major courses that are responsible for social-economic in the region and promote the EAC integration.One of the courses in which the School of Law has takenthe lead is Environmental Law. Environmental law hasemerged since the 1970s as a widely embraced componentof the undergraduate law curriculum in many countries. Itis also a specific focus within numerous postgraduate legalstudies and research programs. As a result, it has become apart of mainstream legal education. Environmental law iscritical in promoting sustainable development andtherefore the School of Law, University of Dar es salaamas the oldest legal training institution has the responsibilityto contribute to the promotion of sustainable developmentby emphasizing how the teaching of environmental law isundertaken. This paper explores reasons for strengtheningteaching environmental law at the SoL UDSM. It explainswhat, why, and how to teach Environmental Law in LawSchools, the Status and trends of teaching EnvironmentalLaw at the University of Dar es salaam, School of Law,points out some constraints to teaching and research inenvironmental law and provides recommendations on how teaching Environmental Law can be strengthened at theinstitution.
